The “CAD Revit” category has appeared on this blog because we are about to receive our first development project from a consultant using Revit. It’s encouraging that it’s from one who previously used AutoCAD LT only and has made the move to BIM.
We use Architectural Desktop (ADT) for Store Layouts & Autodesk Building Systems (ABS) for Services so it will be interesting to see how working between the products goes. All we need is a model to fit out (not alter) so the 3d view “model export” from Revit will probably be sufficient.
Currently I'm planning to try two approaches to integrate the Revit Project into our ADT Project:
- “Per level” 3d view model dwg exports from Revit set as “levels” in the ADT project.
- Revit 3d Model view exported as a single dwg then slice it up with ADT (section tools or display system) to be a “per level” model.
Common level settings in the two projects should mean all the bits add up.
Why not just do our part of the project in Revit?
For an established ADT based office to flip to Revit for one project just isn’t viable. BIM is great but whatever system you use the data you create means that migration to another is a major task, if possible at all. Not saying we’ll never do it but for now the investment in ADT based content, Object Styles and Model data, is large and to re-create it in Revit (or any other system) would be a big task. It took us years to migrate from 2d CAD to ADT BIM and its only relatively recently that the investment in that model data is being exploited.
If anyone out there is working between ADT/Revit on a single project I’d be interested to hear how you're doing it and how it’s going! If you want to comment here would be great, if not email me via the link on this blog.
