You can't leave Auckland without seeing her plane, suspended in the departure area, and thinking of how air travel has changed since her pioneering flight. On 16 October 1936, pioneering aviator Jean Batten landed at the end of the first epic flight from England to New Zealand where she was welcomed by a huge crowd who had flocked to the grass air strip at Mangere to greet her.
