Saab 9–7x: What is Saab-like?

Saab HeritageIn a post “GM FastLane Blog: Just How Saab-like Is It?” Bob Lutz defends the the Saab 9–7X SUV. He details the improvements made to the mid-size SUV (GMT360) platform to create the Saab as compared to the Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender spun off the same platform.

The title poses a question that the post doesn’t answer.

What does “Saab-like” mean?

I don’t know anymore but either, it seems, do GM. The 97–X doesn't fit with what I thought Saab was or aspired to be. The competition (Volvo, BMW, Mercedes) may offer SUV’s but they are purpose built not re-badged ring-ins sold across multiple brands.

Can you pick the odd one out in the evolution of Saab graphic (I added the 9–7X)?

A Saab-like SUV is possible: the 93–X Concept would fit perfectly.

I also didn't like the Saab’aru 9–2X when I saw it at the San Francisco Motor-show but in some ways its a closer fit to the Saab brand. Sporty performance, quirky mechanicals and unique styling (just don't park near an Imprezza). It wouldn't work here where the Imprezza profile is associated with Subaru WRC Rally or cheap imports/boy racers.

Made-over Subaru's and Chevy’s will add volume and, they hope, make money which is I guess what Saab needs right now but at what cost?
