In Conversation - The late great physicist Richard Feynman on ABC

Brilliant, thanks to Phil Plait for finding this;

In Conversation - 26 June 2008 - The late great physicist Richard Feynman

Scientists are sometimes accused of diminishing the beauty of the natural world by explaining it in terms of scientific ideas and processes. Not so, according to the late Nobel prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, who says knowledge about the inner structure of flowers only adds to the excitement, mystery and awe

Humphrey Lyttelton

I’m dreadfully late posting this. I knew of Humphrey’s jazz but it’s the Chairman of “I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue”  I’ll miss most, thanks Humph.

Alan Coren dies

Sad to read this. In addition to “The News Quiz” I remember Alan from appearances on Clive James, Parkinson and other talk shows. He will be missed.

It was today - Apollo 11

Graeme Hill, with Grant Christie, had a great moon astronomy session on Radio Live marking the anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon.

While the Apollo images & video are familiar seeing and standing under a Saturn V Rocket, at Kennedy Space Centre, bought home the true scale of the achievement. It also reinforced how insulting the moon hoaxers, de-bunked during the programme, really are.

Science on talk radio?

Can it be? Talk Radio is usually thought to be the realm of cranks, intelligent design advocates and conspiracy theorists but there is a small sign of hope…

Astronomy (not astrology) and science feature between 10:00 & 11:00 on Graeme Hill’s Saturday morning Radio Live show.

Grant Christie, an astronomer at the Stardome Observatory, covers the universe (easy eh!) followed by Vicki Hyde, NZ Skeptics Chair-entity, chatting about general science topics, both adding healthy degree of skepticism.

It’s not a call in session but still a welcome feature for talk radio. You can listen on the net via the website but no sign yet of a podcast. Something for Radio Live to consider.

Who stole Alistair Cooke?

Is this for real?

If it wasn’t the BEEB would think this was a hoax, but it seems Alistair Cooke's bones were 'stolen'. If true it’s a sad, bizarre, fate for a legendary broadcaster.

Condensed Milk Thursday!

Marcus Lush encores his world famous Condensed Milk Thursday tonight (22 December, 2005).

It started with a suggestion/dare to run an evening of talk-back about condensed milk. Two hours, forty calls, later the first ever C.M.T. was over and became an legend. There is a live on-line feed but where is the C.M.T. Pod-cast!

Radio Live – Marcus Lush – 6pm-10pm every week-night
(But only the last Thursday in October is C.M.T.)

UPDATE: The highlight of C.M.T. had to be the Scottish lady (didn’t catch her name) who warmed up a “catering size can” of condensed milk on the gas stove to make it easier to pour. The result was a hot condensed milk geyser…

What If...

What If rewrites history but unlike most media admits it. Professor Christopher Andrew of Cambridge University asks what if major turning points in history had taken a different turn. By altering a single plausible fact, he re-examines the events of the day.

The latest programme asks the question: “What If... the Germans had discovered that the Allies had cracked Enigma during WWII?”

The Enigma code - What If - History - Radio 4

It's widely accepted that the intelligence the Allies gained from Enigma shortened the war by several years, and saved the lives of thousands of troops and civilians.

With hindsight it's surprising that the German High Command never realised that their master code had been cracked and was daily being monitored by the Bletchley Park code-breakers - an act that was daily contributing to their demise. Had they appreciated this, how would Hitler have reacted, what evasive action would he have taken, and how might this have affected the outcome of World War Two?

Speakers include:

  • Michael Smith, Defence Correspondent, Daily Telegraph
  • Christine Large, Director, Bletchley Park Trust
  • Morag Beattie, former WREN and bombe-operator at Bletchley Park
  • Mac Hobley, former Telecoms engineer and guide at Bletchley Park
  • John Harper, electrical engineer reconstructing a bombe at Bletchley Park

Spike & Eddie

I can only agree with Tony Goodson

Spike begat Eddie:

You know, it's great to find out that one hero of mine has been influenced by another hero of mine.

Clive Anderson's Chat Room

Clive Anderson's Chat Room on BBC Radio 2 is a great comic review of the weeks news. My favourite quote from this weeks edition was Jeremy Hardy commenting on the US elections:

"Bush has launched the war on terror but he's going to expand to all other emotions"

The current episode is available on the web at BBC Clive Anderson's Chat Room

I'm Listening

I'm viewing

  • Shane Jacobson: Kenny

    Shane Jacobson: Kenny
To say it's Aussie Toilet humour is, well it's accurate, but doesn't do this film justice. Wonderful script, brilliant acting and finely balanced, like a teetering porterloo, mix of humour and pathos. It's nearly as good as "The Castle", my favourite Aussie film.

  • Christopher Nolan: The Prestige

    Christopher Nolan: The Prestige
I didn't know anything about this movie before seeing it but it's one of the best for years. About illusionists, it is packed with constant twists and surprises. Add a great cast, direction and production and you have a must see.

  • Nick Park: Creature Comforts - The Complete First and Second Seasons

Nick Park: Creature Comforts - The Complete First and Second Seasons
Brilliance of "person-on-the-street" interviews coupled with aardman's outstanding claymation and subtle visual gags

  • Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up - Live

Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up - Live
It's their best performance, their best composition - recorded live in Korea.

  • Kevin Macdonald: The Last King of Scotland

Kevin Macdonald: The Last King of Scotland
Great performance by Forest Whitaker. Not pleasant viewing but much more interesting than I expected.

  • Todd Field: Little Children

    Todd Field: Little Children
Don't expect a happy childhood story. It's confrontational and disturbing but also rewarding. Worth seeing for Kate Winslets performance alone.
