Review of The Way Up Tour - Toronto - Pat Metheny Group

c h a n d r a s u t r a has superb reviews of Pat Metheny Group’s "The Way Up Tour - Toronto"” and the CD. While you are there, or if not a PMG fan, check out the other content and photo albums. It’s a lovely blog.

c h a n d r a s u t r a: Pat Metheny Group takes Toronto all The Way Up

Even James Joyce, music lover that he was, couldn't help me come up with the adjectives to describe the experience of seeing Pat Metheny Group, on tour”

c h a n d r a s u t r a: Going all The Way Up with Pat Metheny Group

“For those of us who love jazz as a living thing, as an organic and vital form, TWU represents an epic achievement in jazz form”

The Way Up tour is extensive

but, unfortunately, comes nowhere near New Zealand. Tokyo is the closest however 8,809km is a long way to go for a concert. The only way I’ve seen PMG perform to date is on DVD & I hope there will be one of this tour. Experiencing PMG Live is high on my “Must do before I die” list but arranging to be on the other side of the world at the right time is tricky.

TothewayupA long way to “The Way Up” for me!
Auckland to Tokyo 8809 km  332° true
Auckland to Seoul 9597 km  324° true
Auckland to San Diego 10462 km  51° true

PS: This post is green with envy

The compliments about your Blog are justified.

I rarely meet people who know about PMG here. Even the import shops don’t stock many titles so I have to get them via Amazon. The net is great for that!

I asked Pat (via the Q&A section on www.patmethenygroup.com) if he would tour here. Search for "Pacific Tour" to see the post. Small fan base means its unlikely so I'll have to get to him!

If you like First Circle his response to my question "Forward March" may also be of interest. I love that track as it freaks people out.

He doesn’t respond much now but if that means more time spent creating masterpieces link TWU then I don’t mind!

If regions aren’t a problem I have found the DVD's recorded in Japan are available via:

www.cdjapan.co.jp

They are released in Japan well before the US releases (sometimes years).

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments (colour me blushing) and hello back to you from Canada (::waves::). Yesterday I'd done a search to see if any other bloggers were talking about PMG and TWU and only found a few. Yours was the best thing- everything else was in Japanese!! (goes to show you how much of a presence PMG has there, eh). Was so pleased to find this post today but sad to see that you will not be able to see the tour :-( That really sucks. If you can, I hope you will, see it. It's worth it. But if you can't I have a feeling they'll do a DVD of this - they HAVE to. Probably won't until after the tour though so you'll have to sit tight. In the meantime, just enjoy TWU. If you're anything like me you're probably being inspired by it on a regular basis. I'm finding now when I put it on it's over so quickly! 68 minutes just flies by. The music just kind of just fuses with the listener ...

I'm Listening

I'm viewing

  • Shane Jacobson: Kenny

    Shane Jacobson: Kenny
To say it's Aussie Toilet humour is, well it's accurate, but doesn't do this film justice. Wonderful script, brilliant acting and finely balanced, like a teetering porterloo, mix of humour and pathos. It's nearly as good as "The Castle", my favourite Aussie film.

  • Christopher Nolan: The Prestige

    Christopher Nolan: The Prestige
I didn't know anything about this movie before seeing it but it's one of the best for years. About illusionists, it is packed with constant twists and surprises. Add a great cast, direction and production and you have a must see.

  • Nick Park: Creature Comforts - The Complete First and Second Seasons

Nick Park: Creature Comforts - The Complete First and Second Seasons
Brilliance of "person-on-the-street" interviews coupled with aardman's outstanding claymation and subtle visual gags

  • Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up - Live

Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up - Live
It's their best performance, their best composition - recorded live in Korea.

  • Kevin Macdonald: The Last King of Scotland

Kevin Macdonald: The Last King of Scotland
Great performance by Forest Whitaker. Not pleasant viewing but much more interesting than I expected.

  • Todd Field: Little Children

    Todd Field: Little Children
Don't expect a happy childhood story. It's confrontational and disturbing but also rewarding. Worth seeing for Kate Winslets performance alone.
